This long-standing award is
presented to a final year student of BA Fine and Applied Arts at University
of Ulster, Belfast. As the title suggests, it aims to recognise cutting edge
and quality work. The painting is currently part of the growing corporate
collection at Diageo Northern Ireland.
The idea for this painting
arose one day while walking along the River Lagan in Belfast. My son Sean
on discovering a sheet of paper on the ground, decided to make a paper boat,
which he placed on the water. This to me was significant as Sean had now
left his mark on the river. I photographed the incident which I knew would
be a good subject for a painting.
I received the Emerging Artist
award for this painting at the Degree Show in June, 2008.
